The leaves and plants below the tree give them warmth and protection so that they can survive the winter and emerge in spring as beautiful adults. If you would like to see more butterflies, moths, fireflies and other fun and helpful garden insects in your yard, giving them a soft landing for their fall descent and winter home is crucial.

Soft landings aren’t just good for insects. They also help the soil beneath your trees to improve its health and vitality over time, provide food for songbirds, save you the time that you would have spent mowing, cut down on fossil fuel emissions and improve the degree of biodiversity that you have in your yard and therefore in your neighborhood. There are so many reasons to love a soft landing! Plus, doesn’t it just sound like an opportunity to lie down and take a nap?

How Can I Provide Soft Landings Underneath the Trees on my Property?

Don’t mow under your trees:

In order to provide a soft landing for pollinators and beneficial insects, the easiest thing you can do is not mow underneath your trees from the trunk out to the dripline - the farthermost edge of the tree canopy. If you have very large trees and really don’t want to leave an area that large unmown, even just leaving a 10 foot no mow radius around the trunk will help our insect friends immensely. Mowing under trees means a dead end for most creatures that depend on living out part of their life cycle in that area. It also isn’t good for the trees themselves to bear the weight of a mower week after week, year after year. Regular mowing underneath trees compacts the soil and damages the roots of the tree over time. Instead of mowing, string trim (weed whack) the area under your trees to 8-12” in height up to three times a year (spring, summer and fall). String trimming will keep things looking tidier and prevent scrub bushes and trees from taking over. Just make sure that you hand weed close to the trunk so that the trimmer doesn’t damage it.

Don’t use landscape fabric:

You can also support soft landings by not using and/or removing existing landscape fabric from the area under your trees. Landscape fabric prevents many beneficial insects from burrowing into the ground to complete their pupation. It also breaks down over time allowing weed roots to get tangled with the fibers of the fabric and making it even more difficult to get rid of unwanted plants. It has been our experience that landscape fabric as a weed barrier in beds or around trees is never a good plan because it doesn’t work very well and makes more work for you in the long run.

Install appropriate native plants:
If you haven’t got any native keystone trees on your property, consider planting one, or a small grouping of the major supporters of pollinators. Growing from seed will mean little to no disturbance of the soil beneath your tree or damage to its roots. It will take an extra year of patience while you wait for your garden to establish itself, but the plants, your tree and the soil under your tree will be healthier in the long run.

If you just don’t have the patience and/or time and want to install plants under your tree, be very careful not to damage the existing tree roots. As you would for starting with seed, smother the area with cardboard, but use a thick layer of leaves (not wood mulch) instead of a thin layer of topsoil. The following spring or fall (at least 3 months after you lay down cardboard and leaves, and up to one year later) plant plugs starting 3 feet out from the trunk of the tree. Do not put raised beds or thick layers of soil or mulch on top of tree roots because you will deprive the tree of the oxygen it needs to stay healthy. Check your new plugs regularly to see if they need water during the first year. After that woodland native species should thrive on their own except in cases of extreme drought.

— MaryBeth

The bright orange fruits remain on the tree long after leaf drop keeping the trees showy for at least the beginning of winter.

They prefer full sun to part shade and moist, but well drained, sandy soils, but they will tolerate hot, dry conditions, poor soils, wind and urban settings so they can make great yard trees. As with almost all trees, they are best started from seed or very small plugs because the taproot is easily damaged during transplanting or by being held in a pot for too long. Don’t despair that you will never get fruit from your tiny seedling though. A persimmon tree started from seed will start producing fruit after 4-10 years, which is really not that different from the timing for a larger tree. Never forget that all trees are more likely to remain healthy and live longer if you start with a very small tree or seed. Small trees or seeds are also cheaper or even free, much, much easier to plant and usually catch up with larger transplants within 3 years, growing faster and stronger than the larger transplant each year after that. Persimmon trees, like many fruit trees, are dioecious, which means that there are male and female trees. It’s a good idea to plant in groups of three to increase your chances of having one of each gender. Don’t worry, you can plant them relatively closely together so they take up less space. If you do this, their intertwining roots will also increase their stability during storms. If there are already persimmons within 50 feet of where you intend to plant, your chances of setting fruit are definitely increased, but your lone persimmon may end up being a male so it’s still best to plant in multiples if you are planting the straight native.

Shining Sumac is also a keystone species. Co-authored by landscape designer/photographer Rick Darke and entomologist Doug Tallamy, the book argues that beauty and biodiversity are not opposing goals — they are mutually reinforcing. The volume is lavishly illustrated and organized around readable design principles that show how to create layered, living landscapes that are beautiful to people while supplying food, shelter, and seasonal resources for insects, birds, and other wildlife.

Darke and Tallamy begin by examining patterns in wild places — how layers of groundcover, herbaceous plants, shrubs, understory and canopy trees form working ecosystems — and then translate those patterns into garden-scale strategies. Along the way you’ll find chapters on planning outdoor “rooms,” selecting plant palettes that serve both aesthetics and function, integrating edibles and fragrance, and designing edges and transitions so wildlife can move through a neighborhood rather than encounter a wall of turf. Darke’s photography makes the approach feel attainable and inspiring for small and large properties alike.

The book reframes decisions about which plant, where to place it, and how to shape a bed as opportunities to support life rather than simple aesthetic choices. It offers concrete design tools on how to compose layers, where to leave structural winter interest, and how to make paths and lawn areas work with habitat patches rather than against them. Because Tallamy supplies the ecological rationale by explaining how insects drive food webs and why native plant choice matters, the book helps gardeners make defensible, long-term choices and explain them to family, neighbors, or clients. In short, it gives both the “why” and the “how.”

The Living Landscape sits between a beautifully illustrated coffee-table book and a practical design manual.
